Studying abroad broadens my horizons

Carolin Saskia Liese is an exchange student at Alma Mater Europaea from our partner institution University for Health Studies in Bochum, Germany. Under the mentorship of Assistant Professor Mateja Vadnjal, she wrote an excellent essay about Sustainability and human rights by Alberto de Franceschi, related to our annual conference “It's About People”.

"The article The role of health in the debate of sustainability and human rights deals with the profound influence of health as the main subject of a debate about sustainability and human rights. Using several definitions and official statements, it explains why health pervades all social topics discussed nowadays," says the student, adding that nowadays the debate about sustainability and human rights is a permanent topic in societal discussions. "The governments reacted with new laws and regulations, such as the European supply chain act. However, there is one topic that is regularly absent in these debates - health."

Carolin Liese started the studies of Health sciences and Diversity in 2017. She has upgraded her knowledge of the master’s degree in Health sciences and Diversity at the workplace. "During my studies, I have gained various practical knowledge by working part-time at different companies related to health. At the beginning of 2023, I quit my last job to start my adventure abroad – in Slovenia at Alma Mater Europaea," she says and continues that she received a warm-hearted welcome at Alma Mater.

“All essential information and contacts for the future study were conveyed on the Welcome day, followed by a lovely brunch with the Erasmus+ student tutors, who gave me helpful knowledge about Maribor and student life. Having finished half of the semester, I learned a lot about my chosen courses and studies abroad. Especially the latter, along with meeting people from all over the world, broadens my soft skills and complements my learnings about international competencies," she describes.
