A new monograph, Marian Reflections on War and Peace: Trauma, Mourning, and Justice in Ukraine and Beyond, was recently published by the prestigious Routledge publishing house. The book was co-edited by Professor Dr. Lenart Škof, Dean of the ISH Faculty.
This work presents an original Marian approach to war and peace, focusing on the suffering of children, women, and men in Mariupol, across Ukraine, and beyond. The contributors offer new theological perspectives on the contemporary impact of war, drawing on the figure and symbol of Mary as the protector of children, guardian of peace, and mediator of incarnation. The book inspires ecumenical, interfaith, and intercultural engagement.
The chapters explore Mary's role as a symbol within feminist and activist thought and practice, her image as a mediator and comforter in suffering (Mater Dolorosa), and how she has been appropriated or misused for political purposes. Additionally, the book highlights Mary’s power as a source of healing and reconciliation in efforts toward peacebuilding.
This monograph provides valuable theological reflections on war conflicts, global theological ethics, ecofeminist and peace theology, and contemporary political theology.
