The annual production of students from Alma Mater Europaea – Academy of Dance took place on Friday evening at the Španski borci Cultural Centre. With its rich and diverse program, the event once again confirmed the high quality of the academic process at the only higher education institution in Slovenia that offers an officially accredited Bologna-based degree in dance.
"Tonight, we are united by an art form that needs no words, only the body, breath, and heart. Dance is not only about expression; it is thought, emotion, and dialogue. The Academy of Dance is a place of learning and growth, where talent meets perseverance. I thank all the students and lecturers for their dedication in co-creating this year’s production," said Professor Dr. Barbara Toplak Perovič, Director of the Alma Mater Europaea – Academy of Dance, addressing the audience. On this occasion, she also presented special recognitions and awards to the year's most outstanding students and lecturers.
The gala evening, titled "I Only Believe in a God Who Can Dance," a paraphrase of a well-known quote by philosopher Nietzsche, impressed the audience with a high-quality presentation of the dance skills acquired throughout the academic year. At the same time, it offered insight into the creative and pedagogical methods developed by the academy's students and mentors.
Sixteen students took to the stage, supported by thirteen mentors specializing in contemporary dance, ballet, jazz, and urban dance styles. The program was further enriched by guest musician Rihard Zadravec – Riki, whose lively accordion performance added an extra layer of energy, blending movement and sound.
The Dean of the Academy of Dance, Professor Dr. Svebor Sečak, also addressed the audience, emphasizing the importance of professional dance education in Slovenia.
"Alma Mater Europaea – Academy of Dance is not just an educational institution but a reference point for developing dance art and pedagogy across a wider region. Our academic programs enable students to become competent artists, choreographers, and educators with a clear vision and a strong sense of responsibility toward their field. Today’s production is proof that this vision is not only alive but also achievable," Professor Sečak highlighted.
This year’s production once again demonstrated that Alma Mater Europaea – Academy of Dance embodies its mission of integrating artistic education with practice, research, and professional growth. The students’ performances captivated experts and the general public, confirming their high level of knowledge, creativity, and commitment to the Slovenian and broader European cultural space.
