Alma Mater student - Matjaž Lobnik represented the colours of Alma Mater Europaea - ECM at the World Championship in Beach Volleyball. His double placed 27th.
After 5 days of competitions on the sand and in the sun, the World Championship in Beach Volleyball 2018, held in Munich, Germany, successfully finished. The Championship saw 128 competitors from 29 countries. Slovenia sent two teams, a female (Nika Benedik Bevc and Nika Hrovat from the University of Ljubljana) and a male team (Matjaž Lobnik from Alma Mater and Matija Primec, University of Maribor). Both teams qualified for the World Championship by winning the national competition in Ljubljana, that was held in June 2018. The male duo has been playing beach volleyball together for three years, while they had already shared a history of playing indoor volleyball together. They placed 27th; first in the 4th place in Group D, and then in the qualifiers for positions between places 25 and 32. They beat a South African duo (Mamabolo/Mndingi) by 2:0, lost against the Swiss team (Mosimann/Scheidegger) by 2:0 and then beat the Japanese team Kitagawa/Kurokawa with 2:1, herewith finishing on position 27.
The female team Bevc/Hrovat has been playing together since 2012. They finished 29th. According to the Team trainer, Mihajlo Milojević, the Slovene competitors gained important experience, they improved their form from game to game and used competition with excellent players that are playing in the world volleyball league more than well.
The participation of both teams at the World Championship was supported by the Ministry of Education, Student Organisation of Slovenia (SUSA), Assistance Coris, STA Travel, University of Ljubljana University of Maribor and Alma Mater Europaea – ECM.
