This year, the Alma Mater Europaea Dance Academy organized its fifth dance section as part of the 12th International Conference It’s About People 2024, titled Dance between Tradition and Innovation.
The section was divided into two parts, moderated by the Dean, Associate Professor Dr. Svebor Sečak, and Associate Professor Rosana Hribar, Head of the Contemporary Dance Department.
In the first part, topics on the connection between dance and digital technology were discussed, continuing the themes from previous conferences and expanding research into artificial intelligence in dance education. The second part explored the fusion of contemporary dance and flamenco, highlighting how dance reflects art and culture.
The section was opened by keynote speaker Dr. Alice Siu (Stanford University) together with Tatjana Christelbauer (Agency for Cultural Diplomacy in Vienna) with a presentation titled Coppélia’s Book: Deliberation, Truth, Trust, and Hope, in which they explored the impact of artificial intelligence on dance and the ethical issues involved. Other notable speakers included Dr. Simona Somacescu, with her presentation Ballet Performance Between Tradition and Innovation, and Dr. Simona Noja-Nebyla, who, in her lecture, Classical Ballet as a System of Systems, emphasized the need to rethink ballet education for the modern era.
MA students Ana Germ and Jerneja Omahen Razpotnik presented research on the contemporary challenges of ballet education and its role in dance pedagogy. The second part featured presentations on modern dance and flamenco by Johanna Rebecca Greiner, Juan Carlos Lerida, Ana Pandur, and María de los Ángeles Cenizo Salvage.
Dean Dr. Sečak selected five outstanding papers for publication in the conference proceedings, emphasizing the importance of connecting tradition with innovation in dance.
