Professor Dolenc pioneered microsurgery, introducing microsurgical techniques to neurosurgical operations in the former Yugoslavia early in his career. He was among the first in the world to perform surgeries on ruptured aneurysms during the acute phase. Later, his research and surgical advancements in the area of the skull base, particularly in the cavernous sinus region, laid the groundwork for numerous significant surgical achievements. His approach, known as the "Dolenc Approach," became the gold standard and is widely used globally.
Dr. Dolenc published over 200 scientific articles and authored five books that have become essential references for neurosurgeons. His work in microsurgery and the microanatomy of the skull base established new milestones in surgical practice. He was frequently invited to international symposiums as a lecturer and surgeon, sharing his expertise with specialists worldwide.
His dedication to the field earned him numerous accolades. Among them were the Silver Order of Merit of the Republic of Slovenia, the award for outstanding contributions to European neurosurgery, and the honorary citizenship of the City of Ptuj. In 2022, he received the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS) award for his invaluable contributions to neurosurgery.
Professor Dolenc also mentored numerous generations of young neurosurgeons and students. Through his unwavering commitment and passion for neurosurgery, he left a lasting legacy within the medical community in Slovenia and abroad. His contributions will continue to inspire future professionals for years to come.
At Alma Mater Europaea University's ceremonial promotion in October 2024, Rector Professor Dr. Ludvik Toplak awarded Professor Dr. Vinko V. Dolenc an honorary doctorate.
