Rade Trivunčević is a doctoral candidate in humanities at Alma Mater Europaea ISH who is spending three weeks in July 2023 researching at Fordham University in New York City.
Rade, you are a PhD candidate at ISH currently doing research in New York. Do you agree that what you choose to study is one of the most critical decisions in your life? Why did you choose humanities?
Studying gives you a set of new knowledge and experiences that prepare you for your future. I have always been interested in the role and essence of humankind in the world and exploring ourselves through study, which is what the humanities focus on. At AMEU ISH, we have the support of professors so that we can research what really interests us.
What are you researching?
I am a young researcher at the Institute of Law of the Science and Research Centre Koper under the mentorship of Professor Rok Svetlič. I obtained my master’s degree in security studies at the Faculty of Security Sciences of the University of Maribor. In my doctoral studies at the AMEU ISH Faculty of Humanities, I mainly research the transition of Egypt between democracy and authoritarianism. I analyze the modern political history of the country, the influence of its army and the military economy on the socio-political and economic situation in the country, media control and propaganda, and the mutual influence of the Arab world and Europe through globalization. Currently, my main aims are to narrow down the scope of my research and to define the exact plan for my doctoral dissertation.
You are Alma Mater’s first doctoral candidate to do research at Fordham University in New York. How would you describe the experience? Is the study process across the pond different from ours?
As a young researcher, funds from the Public Agency for Scientific Research and Innovation of the Republic of Slovenia have been allocated for my studies. I applied for a three-week period as a guest researcher at Fordham University School of Law. The recommendations and advice from Professor Jurij Toplak, Lenart Škof, Dean of ISH, and my mentor Rok Svetlič helped me to develop a work plan for my research during my visit to Fordham University.
Researching abroad is always an exciting new experience with challenges and adventures. My time is split between work and exploring the people and the city. I have a pleasant environment for both, due to how I have organized my work. I came to New York for three weeks in the summer because then I had fewer study obligations and events to attend. Much of my research is done in the library. Fordham has a vast collection of exciting and up-to-date literature in three primary locations. Some books can be borrowed, and others are accessible online with my Fordham student email and password.

How will you incorporate the experience and knowledge you have acquired into your doctoral thesis?
A whole body of literature that I could not previously access in Slovenia has raised important research questions for me, which will require answers and further work.
How have you been welcomed in New York and at the host institution?
I live in the southern part of Manhattan. At Fordham University, the reception from faculty, administrators, library staff, and others is warm and worthy of every appreciation and praise. If you know what you’re looking for and don’t waste too much of their time, Americans are very friendly and hospitable.
Can an exchange abroad affect your future career path?
It is definitely a new personal experience that opens up many possibilities and has improved my self-initiative and communication skills. [OR: It is definitely a new personal experience that opens up many possibilities, requiring self-initiative and good communication skills.] These are especially important when getting to know people, even those in your own field. I researched working abroad beforehand, which has made my work much more manageable.

What positive experiences, such as from life, culture, and your professional work, will you transfer from NYC to Slovenia?
Above all, I have learned the true meaning of multiculturalism and tolerance and also improved my communication skills. NYC boasts a rich array of cultural and historical institutions, and delicious cuisine is on offer from all over the world. It is a cosmopolitan city that respects and nurtures its history and future in the same spirit.
What valuable experiences have you gained as part of your personal and professional development?
Working abroad presents many challenges, such as organizing your work and time, your knowledge and use of a foreign language, and meeting new people. I have done well in all three of these elements, and time will tell what the results are for my professional development.
What are the challenges in working and studying abroad?
Much depends on the individual’s willingness to adapt to new circumstances and situations. When you are pushed out of your familiar environment and comfort zone, your personality is tempered and tested. You need to be able to plan your work and time and also need good communication skills. Of course, you must make good use of online and other tools, such as maps, timetables for public transport, and for accessing the library and other faculty facilities.

What have you been doing for fun?
I have fond memories of the plays and musicals on Broadway. Compared to back home, tickets, like everything else, are expensive. I just decided to go to see a performance of JK Rowling’s new bestseller Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. I’m thinking of seeing a stand-up performance at one of the many comedy clubs. When it comes to cuisine, you can’t go without tasting the famous NYC cheese pizzas and hot dogs.
