Physiotherapists Raise Awareness About Multiple Sclerosis

On World Multiple Sclerosis Day, observed on May 30th, physiotherapy students from Alma Mater, in collaboration with the Multiple Sclerosis Society Maribor, organized an informational stand to raise awareness about the importance of regular physical activity. They also introduced the general public to basic exercises and motor skills testing.

The event's purpose was to highlight the essential role of physiotherapy in maintaining functional ability and quality of life for individuals diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. The students presented practical aspects of therapeutic exercises, emphasized the value of an active lifestyle, and offered basic assessments of motor functions, which can help identify early signs of neurological changes.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disease of the central nervous system characterized by demyelination—the breakdown of the protective covering (myelin) of nerve fibers—which results in disrupted nerve signal transmission. The disease can present in various forms and progress at different rates, reflected in symptoms such as visual disturbances, muscle weakness, balance issues, spasticity, and cognitive impairment. Although MS remains incurable, modern medical and rehabilitative interventions allow for effective symptom management and improvement of functional capacity.

With their presence and professional knowledge, the students significantly raised public awareness and encouraged a more understanding and supportive attitude toward individuals with multiple sclerosis. At the same time, their direct engagement with passersby demonstrated the value of collaboration between students, professionals, and the community.
