Professor Toplak in the New York Times

On June 29, 2023, one of the most read newspapers, the New York Times, published an opinion by Professor Jurij Toplak on a recent US Supreme Court's ruling.

On June 27, the United States Supreme Court rejected an appeal by pro-Donald Trump groups that argued for an arrangement under which courts would lack the jurisdiction to review election legislation. The decision, by which the court confirmed its authority to decide electoral disputes, was adopted by six votes to three.

In the New York Times, Professor Toplak endorsed the ruling, arguing that the Supreme Court is "best suited to have the last word in federal election cases." He emphasized that the decision is in line with international election principles.

While it is common for politicians and lawyers worldwide to dismiss international best practices based on the uniqueness of their legal systems, in the U.S., too, only the Supreme Court can ensure consistency across all states and thus protect the integrity of federal elections, he commented the views of lawyers who criticized the ruling.

Toplak, who has been lecturing at Fordham University in New York since 2019, was awarded the Lawyer of the Year title by the Slovenian Lawyers' Association for his book Handbook of Electoral Law (co-edited with David Schultz, Routledge 2022). The Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, the Boston Globe, The Guardian and Financial Times have published his legal views.
