Roman Games in Ptuj marked by Archival Studies

On Friday, August 18, 2023, the Department of Archival Studies at Alma Mater Europaea held a professional meeting titled "Archival Service in the Roman Empire with a Focus on Petovion" at the Grand Hotel Primus. The event was part of the Roman Games, held for the sixteenth time this year.

The participants were initially addressed by the head of the department and archival expert, Dr. Peter Pavel Klasinc: "Ptuj is an extraordinary place for me, as it was here at the Historical Archive in 1964 that I became more familiar with archival studies and archiving. A decade later, during excavations with colleagues who were archivists and archaeologists, we discovered a wide variety of ancient artifacts, indicating the importance of the city of Ptuj, or Poetovio, during that time."

Andrej Klasinc, the president of the Poetovio LXIX Society and organizer of the Roman Games, mentioned that the mission of the Roman Games is to transfer knowledge about history to younger generations. "We constantly remind everyone that history needs to be taken care of and properly preserved. I'm pleased that Alma Mater initiated the enhancement of the Roman Games in the professional aspect, and I hope that next year, we can jointly organize a major international scientific symposium."

The professional meeting continued with a presentation of the research from Armin Bečić's master's thesis, titled "Archival Service in the Roman Empire with a Focus on Petovion."

As special guests, renowned archaeologists Marija Hernja Masten and Ivan Žižek provided more insight into the architectural history of ancient Ptuj and the profession of an archivist.
