»Studying at my Alma Mater was a first-class and innovative experience for me,« emphasized Jože Zalar, a doctoral student in social gerontology. His doctoral dissertation entitled The Influence of Older Adults on Updating the Organization of Tourist Farms in Slovenia, under the mentorship of Professor Rok Ovsenik, identified the influences of older adults on the organization of tourist farm operations.
Zalar's research was based on the transfer of ownership and inheritance, intergenerational organizational relations and cooperation, education, and social inclusion of older adults on tourist farms. »The area of influence and role of the elderly population on tourist farms in Slovenia is a subject that needs consideration, as the demographic structure of people, in general, is getting older. The influences on modernization of the organization are primarily a moral influence, which is mainly reflected in good intergenerational relations and financial assistance to the young generation that is just starting its career path.«
»The modernization of farms with the complementary activity of tourism presupposes the involvement of the elderly in the social environment, whereby the cooperation of the values of the two generations and their coordination has a significant impact. Both factors have a complex impact on everyday life and work on the farm,« says Zalar. He added that for optimization in agricultural development, some changes would be necessary at the level of human resources: acquisition of appropriate skills, motivation for changes, and the ability to follow technology and organization. In addition to the vision (preserving tradition) and mission (preserving natural heritage and motivation for values), the holder of the complementary activity of tourism on the farm will have to plan the goals strategically, the paths to them, and, last but not least, ensure social and economic benefits. »On the national level, social cohesion, integration of all structures into social life and socio-economic networks that will ensure economic and social changes will be necessary. More significant support for farms with the complementary activity of tourism if they are to enter the global market competently with a market economy and information knowledge,« concludes the Ph.D. student.
