In the final part, the graduate of the Nursing study program at Alma Mater researched the knowledge of first aid among the volunteer firefighters of the Lenart Fire Association. He emphasizes that the tasks of volunteer firefighters have changed a lot in recent years.
It often happens that volunteer firefighters are the first on the scene of an accident, so their knowledge of first aid and care for a vitally endangered person is essential. Volunteer firefighters are not experts in the health care field, but with appropriate training, they can be taught to be competent in providing first aid when the situation requires it. "Studies show that the work of volunteer firefighters no longer focuses only on fire safety, but the range of tasks has expanded to the field of technical rescue, preventive inspections, accidents with dangerous substances, traffic accidents, education of the general population and the like.
"We often offer first aid to the firefighters during interventions," says student Jure Šimek. He adds that in his thesis research, he found the theoretical knowledge of first aid for vitally endangered among the volunteer firefighters of the Lenart Fire Association, which was rated very good. "When you arrive as first to the scene of an accident, the knowledge you have about first aid is essential. Due to ignorance or carelessness, the victim may suffer additional injuries that prolong his hospitalization or, in the worst case, cause death," the student emphasizes, adding that the study showed that a good knowledge of first aid is necessary for successful intervention.
