With physiotherapy effectively over dementia

As the world's population ages, the number of people with dementia, which affects memory, thinking, speech, and other features, are also increasing. This, in turn, gradually reduces the ability of people to live independently and perform everyday activities. Physiotherapy treatment of these patients is becoming more frequent and more effective.

Most people with dementia stay in homes for the elderly, where physiotherapists also play a crucial role in treating these people. "In my diploma thesis, I focused on the physiotherapy treatment of persons with dementia in homes for the elderly in Slovenia and abroad. I learned that physiotherapists abroad often use high-intensity exercise, especially according to the HIFE program. This is a high-intensity functional exercise, which consists of exercises for balance and muscle strength," says Ines Ramšak, a graduate of physiotherapy at the Alma Mater. "Physiotherapists in Slovenia also often use functional/daily activities when treating people with dementia. At the same time, balance and muscle-strengthening exercises are the most effective. The HIFE program is not yet in use here," the graduate points out.

The graduate is convinced that regular education and training of physiotherapists from homes for the elderly, who regularly treat people with dementia, would make sense. "With this, we would achieve that physiotherapists would be even more qualified to work with people with dementia. And the physiotherapeutic treatment of these people would be of higher quality," she concludes.
