"The time has come for the EU to think and decide about its institutional consolidation to become an autonomous and influential international player," began the former president of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, in his address at the 12th Annual Conference of Europe's Sciences and Arts Leaders and Scholars It''s About People 2024.
He then focused on the approaching anniversary of Slovenia's full membership in the European Union. He highlighted the importance of the European idea in Slovenia's independence movement and the importance of democracy and European integration for the country's identity.
"The European elections that we expect soon are certainly one of the most important in the last 20 years. Mainly due to geopolitical tensions, such as the conflict in Ukraine and instability in the Middle East. That is why the participation of citizens in voting, who will decide the future of Europe amid these global challenges, is all the more important."
Pahor advocates for greater integration within the EU, as the continent can effectively address complex geopolitical issues only with a more cohesive European Union. Regarding defense and security, he supports the idea of a more connected European defense policy within the framework of NATO, mentioning Sweden's decision to join NATO after 200 years.
The future of Europe requires the political will to continue institutional reforms and the possible convening of a new convention to discuss the future of the EU. "I look optimistically at the upcoming challenges and call on everyone to be united and care for preserving peace, security, and democratic values in Europe," he concluded.
