Physiotherapists are also indispensable for gastroenterological patients

Tadeja Šket is a graduate of physiotherapy at Alma Mater. In their final work, she presented the effects of physiotherapeutic treatment on the psychophysical well-being of gastroenterology patients.

The student started from the theory that colon and rectal cancer represents a difficult life test for the patient. The primary treatment is surgery, which can be temporary or permanent stoma removal. "Physiotherapists with a holistic approach to the treatment of gastroenterological diseases help improve the patient's functional abilities, reduce pain and restore psychological well-being," emphasizes the graduate. She conducted the survey using primary demographic data, prescribed medical procedures, and a general health assessment.

"Almost 70 percent of gastroenterology patients believe that a 14-day physiotherapy treatment improves psychophysical well-being. Their physical condition has improved, and psychological problems in the area of depression and anxiety, as well as sleep problems, have decreased," explains Tadeja Šket. He adds that after treatment, negative aspects of psychophysical well-being still stand out, such as pain during daily tasks, anxiety, concern for future health, excitement when filling the stoma bag, fear that it will loosen, and the importance of being close to the toilet.
