"The protection of people, animals, property, and infrastructure to prevent accidents or reduce the consequences is a comprehensive system taken care of by politics. The essential purpose is to prevent or reduce the consequences of accidents. All this is carried out by various forces for protection and rescue, established by the state, municipalities, or other organizations," Pogorevc explains. He continues that the most recognizable forces or activities that carry out protection and rescue are the fire service and units of the civil protection service. "These segments are also essential in the protection and rescue system. The first one is crucial, as a huge number of interventions in the system are carried out by firefighters. While the second segment of civil protection services and units is organized when certain protection and rescue tasks cannot be carried out by professional or volunteer rescue services," he explains.

The firefighting segment in the Republic of Slovenia is divided into voluntary and professional firefighting. There are thirteen professional fire brigades and as many as 1,341 volunteer fire brigades. Civil defense is organized to protect against natural and other disasters. This system includes Management, various units, services, and protective rescue equipment, facilities, and devices. "In the forefront of the public and promoting protection and rescue are mostly volunteer firefighters. With the task, I showed the important role of professional firefighters, who, despite their small number, perform the lion's share in the protection and rescue system," says Pogorevc. He added that the professional and volunteer fire brigades in Slovenia are a pillar of the protection and rescue system and the activity of civil protection.

Andraž Pogorevc also points out that professional firefighting units have better technical equipment than regional civil protection units. While compared to volunteer firefighting units, they have comparable or equivalent. "Professional fire brigades carry out the majority of interventions about their numbers compared to volunteer fire brigades and regional civil protection units. Professional firefighters also undergo more training and education than volunteer firefighters and members of regional civil protection units," concludes the newly-minted mayor, adding that professional firefighters are a significant actor in the entire system of protection and rescue in the Republic of Slovenia.
