Why Dreams Matter: The Intersection of Science and Subjectivity

Stanford University Press has published an article by our esteemed professor, Dr. Maja Gutman Mušič, on why dreams matter. We are very proud of her achievements and contributions to understanding the unconscious.

“Dreams have long fascinated thinkers, from philosophers to psychologists, who explore the mysteries of the unconscious mind. Traditionally, dreams were studied within the frameworks of philosophy and psychology. However, data science and computational linguistics advancements now bring a scientific perspective to dream analysis. While studying dreams enters a new era of empirical research, balancing this data-driven approach with the rich theoretical tradition that has guided dream studies for centuries remains challenging. As we continue to explore the unconscious through science and storytelling, dreams offer a unique window into the human psyche, deserving precise analysis and deep respect. Dreams are personal yet paradoxically universal, reflecting both individual and collective concerns. Modern tools, such as natural language processing (NLP), enable researchers to analyze dream reports on a large scale, revealing patterns that link dreams to waking life events, such as those from 2020.”
