Let the adventure begin

WELCOME DAY AT AMEU

At the beginning of semester, we organize an introduction Welcome day for all incoming students. On that day we provide students information about the teaching-learning process, get to know them with academic formalities, integrate them with the other foreign students, interact with facilities, etc. It usually takes place in campus Maribor.

Upon the commencement of lectures, students are generally engaged in the introduction week. This is a fantastic opportunity for newcomers to get familiarized with the school and staff, as well as some of their future classmates. There is also a traditional “brucovanje” event held in November, when older students “initiate” the firstyears into the student body. Towards the end of the year, in December, there is a so called “Slavnostna Akademija” (Celebratory Academy), which hosts some well-respected speakers and there’s even a concert!

ACCOMODATION

Hunting for the right place to suit your needs and wishes is difficult, but we’re here to help! As a foreigner, your choices are generally split into three categories – you can stay in student dormitories, find a hostel room or settle in an apartment. The price of dormitories, depending on room size and category is typically around 72 – 250€ / month. Renting an apartment is slightly more expensive, at around 200€/month, depending on the location, size, adaptation, furnishing etc. You have one- or two-bed rooms. Utilities are not included in the price, and are around 50€ / month. Finding a roommate in the Alma Mater community is always a good idea, as it is an easy way to stay on top of your studies, make friends and bring down the cost of housing. Below are a few useful links to help you in your search. Please note that certain websites are only in Slovene. You can use Google Chrome to have them instantly and fully translated into your language of choice. TEMPORARY RESIDENCE PERMIT

Foreign student, who is accepted to study in any form of education may be issued a temporary residence permit in Slovenia. Residence registration is the registration of your place of residence on Slovenian territory and is mandatory for all residents. You must register your temporary residence in Slovenia at the administrative unit where you reside within eight days of entering Slovenia or receiving the document showing the legality of your temporary residence.

When registering a temporary residence, you must submit:

  • a valid identity card or passport,
  • proof of the legality of your temporary residence in Slovenia (Confirmation of enrolment at AMEU) and
  • proof that you have the right to reside at the address you are registering (a statement of ownership or co-ownership, a lease or sublet contract, consent of the owner, one co-owner or an accommodation provider – the owner’s consent does not need to be certified).

The registration of a temporary residence is valid for a maximum of two years or for the period of permitted stay if this is less than two years.

FOOD SUBSIDIES

Slovenia has a long-standing tradition of providing its students with a so-called “študentski boni” (student vouchers) to be used on two meals per day. This subsidy is valued at around 2.60€ and can be used at many of the city’s restaurants through a mobile application platform. Read more hre: https://www.studentska-prehrana.si/

COST OF LIFE

The cost of life in Slovenia varies greatly on one’s lifestyle and preference. You will need minimum 200€ /month for all your food-related expenses, excluding tobacco or alcohol. Given the small size of Slovenian cities, cost of transport is very much dependent on personal lifestyle – most locals either walk or use a bicycle to get around town.

BANKS & CURRENCY

The official currency of Slovenia is the EURO (€). There are several international banks, as well as some local ones such as Abanka, Nova KBM, SKB, Delavska Hranilnica, etc. They are generally open from 8am to 5pm, with a lunch break in between. Some banks offer cheap or even free creation of accounts for students. You can withdraw funds from most foreign bank accounts at local ATMs, however, you may be charged a service fee for the transaction. Please inquire into the details with your home bank – they may also provide you with a list of places where you can access your account.
